WHEN WE FIGHT, WE WIN!; Art, Cultural Organizing and Social Movements

Wednesday, June 20, 2018

10am-1:30pm (30 minutes for lunch which will be provided)

Facilitated by AgitArte’s Dey Hernández Vázquez and Jorge Díaz, with Author Greg Jobin-Leeds and Artist Rachel Schragis

#MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter, climate and immigration protests, these are just a few of the remarkable social movements that have blossomed in recent years. AgitArte’s popular education workshop will examine the role of art and cultural work in social change.  AgitArte puts this organizing strategy into practice by using their recently completed participatory: End the Debt! Decolonize! Liberate! Movement Unity Scroll. This powerful people-powered work of art is a means for a deeper conversation about solidarity and the struggle against colonialism — central tasks of today’s resistance movements. AgitArte is a Puerto Rico and Massachusetts based organization with projects in the US South, Chicago, NY and across the country. While past workshops have focused on colonial practices in the museum, AgitArte focuses on larger societal and culture issues. They shine a light on the root causes that have broad and profound impact. Using a combination of participatory visual theater, teach-in, and arts production, participants will leave with an overview of these larger social and political structures of colonialism and Puerto Rican history and conditions since Hurricane Maria.  In the process, participants will also see art as an organizing tool in action and leave with insights about how to bring deep arts-based political education in to their own work.
